Managing open positions

Reading PnL and ROE, moving exits, adding, closing part or all, and the alerts that help.

Key ideas

  1. 1Open PnL is what you would gain or lose if you closed now, before closing fees. ROE is that as a percentage of your margin.
  2. 2You can change a position’s take profit and stop loss at any time, from Positions in Lance Trade or the position in the bot.
  3. 3Close all or part: the bot has Close 50% and Close all; Lance Trade closes at market and cancels the position’s TP and SL with it.
  4. 4Your bot warns you when a position nears liquidation, and tells you when a TP or SL fills.

Reading a position

  • Size and value: how much of the coin, and what it is worth now.
  • Entry price: your average price in.
  • Open PnL and ROE: what you would make or lose closing now, in dollars and as a share of your margin.
  • Liquidation price: where Hyperliquid would close it.
  • TP and SL: the exits waiting on Hyperliquid.
Worked example: Reading an open position, then closing itBTC at an example price
Position
$1,000 long at 10x from 100,000
BTC a day later
103,000 (+3%)
Open PnL, before fees
+$30
ROE
+30% of the $100 margin
Fee to open
−$0.95
Fee to close
−$0.98
Funding
−$0.30
Net PnL
+$27.77

Open PnL is the price move alone. The fees to open and close, and a day of funding at Hyperliquid’s baseline rate, come off it to give the net PnL.

Changing it

  • Move or add a take profit and stop loss at any time.
  • Add to it: the entry moves toward the new price, and so does the liquidation price.
  • Close part: in the bot, Close 50%.
  • Close all: in the bot or in Lance Trade. Closing at market cancels its TP and SL.

Alerts that help

Common mistakes

  • Watching only ROE. A big ROE at high leverage can still be a small move away from liquidation.
  • Adding to a position without checking the new liquidation price. Adding moves your average entry.
  • Leaving a position open without exits before stepping away.

Lance Learn is education, not advice. Examples use made-up or rounded numbers and say so; nothing here tells you what to trade.

Trading perpetual futures with leverage is high risk. Prices can move fast and you can lose all the money you put in. Lance is software: it does not give investment advice, manage money or trade on anyone’s behalf. Trades are executed on Hyperliquid, a third-party exchange that is not affiliated with Lance. Lance is not available to persons in the United States, the United Kingdom and sanctioned countries.
